About VetDIS

What is VetDIS?

VetDIS is shortcut for veterinary health data standard (Veterinary Data Interface Standartization). The idea and objective is to define, create and follow a structured data management interface and terminology standards, based on latest technologies for data transfer between heterogenous systems in veterinary practice, without limitation of pratice type, national habits and legals, or language.

The idea of the project

Currently, there are a large number of disparate systems and equipment used in veterinary practice, for example, client software, equipment and software for data processing laboratory, x-ray, ultrasound findings, as well as a number of economic systems that are used in current practice.

Frequent and sometimes insoluble problem is transfer of data between these systems, whether for the purpose of keeping complete medical records of a specific patient and for generating data such as economic data for tax returns, statistical reports and so on.

These different heterogeneous systems are not able to communicate with and thus the need for manual data transfer – rewriting the manual, which is often both time consuming and prone to transcription errors. For this reason many users did’t it.

VetDIS’s idea is to create a single language for these systems to make them are able to transmit the relevant data, saving the work of the users and to minimize any errors.

But this language but must be independent of the platform itself (type of computer / equipment, operating system, etc.) and designed to meet the high-level demands, to meet current standards and has been easily implementable for different suppliers into their software, devices etc.

Similar language currently exists in human medicine, it is a successful and well-maintained project called HL7 (www.hl7.org), but there is no equivalent in veterinary medicine. VetDIS have a target; create this “language”  with help of a broad professional and maintain it well updated.
